Awakened OOC (Open)

In early summer of 2009, an insomnia study was conducted on a group of strangers, using a new drug developed to help control erratic brain functions that prevented sleep. This drug, slated for use in a small number of test subjects by the FDA, lowered the brainwaves to near comatose levels. The test subjects, ranging from ages 16 to 40, would enjoy a month's worth of restful nights sleeping under the watchful eyes of Dr. Shell's staff and monitoring equipment.
In the early summer of 2009, these experiments unlocked the potential of mankind...

You are one of the few people who, for whatever reason, agreed to take part in the trials. In your dreams, you will pass through the dreamworld and met your true self. When you awake, your physical body will awaken with your energy body, connected to the universe in ways you could only imagine. You control the warp and weave of the universe, manipulating the elements. Though you can use any element you wish, to achieve goals great and small, you are most comfortable with one element, and the matching element. It's opposite is almost entirely unusable to you, and you have difficulty controlling the element opposite your secondary. You do have limits to your power, but using the elements does not tire you out quickly.

The other Awakened, those that achieved the Awakening through effort and time, occupy positions of power and influence throughout the world. They have been unchallenged by the handful of people who find this power, because they destroy anyone who refuses to bend to their corrupt will. We pose the greatest threat they have faced in years, a group of strangers brought together by our newly found strength, able to survive against even the most practiced of them by working together until our powers grow. Within a few short years, we could overtake them and free the world of these Awakened rulers, or become their replacements as the leaders of our globe...
Our city, Redding, California, is about to become a war zone of Awakened magic, and you are going to be hunted....

The elements will include...

Fire and Lightning
Ice and Water
Wind and Light
Earth and Dark
These are the elements that pair together, if your primary element is one, the other is your secondary.

Fire and Ice
Lightning and Water
Wind and Earth
Light and Dark
These elements are opposed. If your primary element is one, the other is almost entirely unusable to you. The opposite of your secondary will also be significantly weaker.

Awakening will take about a week, though it requires only one treatment to take effect. During that time, each of us will experience changes in different orders based on our own minds, these orders are up to you to decide. Changes include speaking with your energy self, finding that sleep has been replaced by a trance-like state of awareness, control over elements which may start exclusively with your primary and secondary or may be a general talent which blossoms to show strength in one area a few days later, learning to travel to the dream world (must have trance state to do), learning to use your energy body to communicate with other Awakened (must be able to speak to energy body), and eventually the total release of your power constraints to allow full control over your magical potential (must have been using the minor powers first).

Due to the nature of the story, we will have the initial group join, and the RP will close for a while. About the time we get comfortable with our powers, we will introduce a way for more people to join the RP, if anyone decides to join after it has started.

Bio
Personality: Kind of emotionally distant. She doesn't like sharing feeling with anyone, but she does like having friends.
History: She was raised by an aunt, and developed an unusual interest in people's stuff. She picked up the habit of picking up things that are not hers, and still does. She lived in Redding all her life, and is currently in her final year of college. The stress of school has caused her to develop insomnia.
Additional/optional information: She tends to go for older guys. Had a thing with one of her professors for a while until he suddenly quit.

Personality:Shylla is a punk baby; the daughter of failed rebellion. So, she basically dresses like a punk-rocker, but actually keeps to herself and is very sly. She likes people and often used them to her advantage. She also does like a good party. Her fire is subtle, when motivated, her passion pushes her towards her goals.
History:Shylla was the product of a punk rocker, his young groupie, and a stupid drunken night that neither can quite remember. In the best interest of Shylla, the two stayed together and eventually got married. However, they kept her in that rebellious and poor music world where she was subjected to the wrong people and the wrong things. So, after an incident when she was 9 years old, her parents left the California music world and moved up north to the conservative mountain town of Mt. Shasta, only an hour and a half away from Redding. Her life in Mt. Shasta was an easy one, she went to school, hung out with friends. There wasn't much to do and so her grades in school were always above average. When she graduated high school she moved on to Humbholt State University. There, she got into some of the things her parents had moved her to Redding for, mainly smoking and drinking and partying. There was always something going on and so her grade plummeted to the point where her parents refused to pay for any more schooling and then wouldn't allow her to go home. It was a godsend when she heard about the study in Redding. It paid for the entire summer so she could live and save up money for the next year.
Additional/optional information: She really is quite the functional stoner.

Bio
Personality: Happy, but not overly fond of showing it. Tends to be somewhat cynical. Smart and creative, but not driven enough to use it. Fiercely protective of his friends.
History: Grew up in a large town, graduated on schedule, took a year off and then went to the local college. Advanced slowly through various software companies, never really impressing his bosses. Mid level programmer, moved to Redding when his company relocated him six months ago. He has trouble sleeping because of the noise from the city streets.
Additional/optional information: He has a brother, and his family is all alive and in good health. No particular tragedies in his past, but also very few high points.

Bio
Personality: Anthony keeps to himself a lot of the time, usually only talking to a few people and is never caught in big groups.
History: Born and raised in California, Anthony is used to the warm weather, and the cold is somewhat alien to him though on the rare occasions when it does snow, and he is actually outside in it, he enjoys himself. Even though he lives in California he doesn't enjoy the large amounts of sunlight that much, as he has sensitive eyes, and so he keeps indoors as much as possible. He is athletic and is very good at basketball, although he doesn't usually play with anyone, because he has very few friends, and the select ones he does keep, they don't even talk to him that much.
Additional/optional information: His parents are divorced and he is currently living with is father, but goes to visit his mother in Colorado occasionally.

Bio John is a natural fighter. Agile and dexterous, John is able to outmaneuver most opponents that want a piece of him. Lately though, that hasn't been a problem since he has yet to be defeated in a one on one fight. Of course, when your old man was a drunken ass, one had to learn to defend oneself or risk being beaten until blood started coming up out of one's mouth...
Personality: Because of his past, John Corter does not take well to people being taken advantage of in any sense of the word. If he sees or hears of such a thing, rest assured he'll be around to knock some sense into the offending party. Quick to anger, but not to the level his old man was, John has gotten into trouble more than once with the law because if it.
History: Being raised in an abusive home, even before his mother left him and his drunkard of a father behind, John quickly learned he couldn't rely on anyone but himself. Even after Child Protection Services took him away from the man, John was too far gone to listen to anyone that thought themselves his better. That was until he stopped a small time gang from molesting a girl they had surrounded in a dark alleyway, five to one. The group didn't know what hit them as John fell on them like a force of nature. While he still has attitude problems, Mr. Corter is not the punk he used to be. Attempting to get his life together and get some sleep in the process since he is still plagued by nightmares of his past, John signed up for the drug testing, hoping it would help in that end...
Additional/optional information: Having trained under a local master in the art of martial arts, John is not only quick but he is also lethal if he ever chose to be. But, he has learned some control over his temper and that to strike without cause or reason is to become what he fears the most... Just a month ago, John received a letter saying that one of his last remaining grandfolks had left him a substantial amount of money to use as he saw fit, so long as he used it to better himself and the world around him. The total sum amount comes up to 2.5 million dollars. (As I said, I can RP just about anyone lol.)

Nicely done, accepted to both of you. The IC is long since in the Modern Fantasy section, you can start at any time. You can begin your post as far before the first night of testing as you'd like, but in some form I'd like everyone to have a description (detailed if possible) of the dream they have that first night. After that, it's quite a freeform RP with options to join as a group, to go solo, or even to fight the 'heroes'. Have fun. ^^
Oh, and Virgil? What kind of martial art does he study? Tae-Qwan-Do is popular, of course, but there's quite the variety of styles.

Kaely, nicely done. I'll see if I can squeeze in a good post here, and let everyone join me in the lobby for the quick info DL on how everyone reacted with unusual dreams and all that.

Okay, so everyone now knows about the dreams and the brain activity... From here on there will be slow, subtle clues to something being odd for a bit. We'll each adjust at different rates. Some people will notice more development of powers earlier, some may speak to their energy selves sooner, or maybe even simply become more aware of their surroundings or experience more physical prowess. It's all based on the individual, and what you feel you'd like to write first. At the moment, electricity around Will is going somewhat odd, and he's noticing power fluctuations more than he should normally.

Excellent, excellent... I'll point out that I really wish I could be here more often, but work running to midnight interferes with that goal. I don't think I'll ever be more than three days away from a computer, but I may often have to skip a day between posts...

still open?? i get rather attached to my chars and i dont want to build one that doesnt have a home if you know what i mean.

If it's anything close to passable, it has a home here. I'd love to see all eight elements filled, though something tells me that's not likely.
